It was originally steam powered.

    Manufactured in 1927 and 1928 by Artizan Factories, Inc. of North Tonawanda, NY.  Calliopes are high-pressure instruments that virtually explode their music through brass pipes.  Invented in America in the mid-19th century, they were originally powered by steam but eventually converted to compressed air.

    This particular instrument came from New Wilmington, Pa.
